Peer Programs
Research has shown that peer programs are powerful! Teens learn to be resources for each other and younger students while at the same time building their own skills. Adaptations of the following programs are available, and many are ideal for service-learning projects, leadership training, cadet teachers or students at risk. Below is a listing of our peer programs.
- Friends Help Friends : This four-hour workshop provides teens with the skills and confidence to talk supportively to someone whose chemical use or other behavior is causing concern.
- Fun Factor: A one to six-hour training where teens learn to lead a variety of games and other fun activities for use at lock-ins, get-acquainted events, TREND meetings or informal parties
- HISTEP (High School Taught Education Program): A two-day peer teaching program where teens learn to teach prevention lessons to elementary and middle school students on such topics as handling bullies; alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; self-esteem; handling feelings; making decisions; and developing friendships. ADVANCED HISTEP and other one-day formats offer additional strategies and lessons.
- Peer Helping: This is perhaps the oldest and best known prevention strategy for middle and high school students. Youth learn listening and problem solving skills and how to make referrals to adults who can help. Training can last from one to five days, depending on the school/organizational goals.
- Prevention By The Book: This one-day peer teaching program trains teens to use children's literature as a basis for teaching prevention lessons to students in primary grades. These lessons present a children's story and related activities that develop a prevention skill.
- TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use):
TATU, a program developed by the American Lung Association, is being implemented by NCADA in high schools in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County. TATU trains teens to teach tobacco use prevention lessons to students in grades 4-6, assists teens as they develop and teach their lessons, and helps teens with tobacco-related advocacy activities in their school and community. - TryPOD (Try Putting Off Drugs):
A newly developed NCADA program, TryPOD is a 5½-hour peer training designed to reduce underage drinking. TryPOD prepares high school juniors and seniors to teach sophomores the latest research about alcohol’s effect on the developing teen brain.
